Degaussing removes data by rearranging the magnetic field on hard drives and other electronic media to completely erase it. This is accomplished with a high-intensity magnet that completely rearranges the magnetic structure of the media resulting in irrecoverable data. Although a drive is no longer functional after being degaussed, the NSA recommends that media be physically destroyed after degaussing.
